A friend of mine is wanting to sell me a mid 1960's 9023A. What do you think?

It's an Airline 9023A, the mid 1960's version of the Airline you got from me awhile back. Basically it's a Supro model 24 in drag....A very good amp, it came with a JensenC12Q in it, if the price is right it would be hard to go wrong.

It's a bit different than your Airline because it has two volume and two tone controls instead one shared tone control for both channels, the output transformer is smaller than the earlier versions too. It is really the same circuit as the early 60's 1624T, they only made the one like we have (8503S) for a couple years before they added the tone control for both channels and this is the same circuit you will find in the 9023A your looking at, the second version of the 6973 1624t.

I found that the 9023A is a good slide guitar amp, just crank it and turn the tone pot way down, you'll feel like Duane Allman, it's a very forgiving slide amp.

History of Valco

The Valco company has its roots in the National String Instrument Corporation, which was founded in 1927. The company is famous as the first manufacturer of resonator guitars, which were hugely popular in blues and (a bit later) bluegrass music. National merged with the Dobro company, another maker of resonator guitars, around 1932 to form the National Dobro Corporation. The company began producing electric instruments in the 1930s that included electric guitars, lap steels, mandolins and amplifiers. These pre-war electric instruments are fairly rare today, though the lap steels pop up with some regularity. The archtop bodies for the guitars were sourced from Regal and then from Kay, but the electronics were developed and manufactured by National-Dobro. The Supro brand name was introduced in the mid-‘30s for cheaper electric instruments. Read More >
